Windows

Replacement, repair and glass, with what a thousand homeowners reported paying set against what the cost estimators model, and the gap explained rather than averaged away.

This section opened on 2 November 2026. It works the way the rest of the site does: every figure names the guide it came from and the date that guide was updated, and where sources disagree we show the disagreement instead of splitting the difference.

Windows are the first subject on this site where one publisher reports what people actually paid, from its own survey of a thousand customers, while the other models what the work should cost. Those two methods produce numbers $283 apart on the same product in the same year. Neither is wrong. We show both and say which question each one answers.

The eight questions so far

Page The short answer What it adds
Window replacement cost $517 a window surveyed, $800 modelled a quantity table whose every row is one multiplication, printed under prose promising volume discounts
Window repair cost about $400 two publishers who genuinely differ, which on this site is the rarer and more useful case
Window glass replacement $300 to $880, average $375 an identical range and an identical average on two unconnected sites, neither of which says where it came from
Double or triple pane $80 a window apart a project total divided out so the two publishers can finally be compared, and what three in four buyers actually choose
Egress window cost about $3,500 to $4,129 the window is $100 to $700 of it; the rest is a hole in the ground, and the way the sash opens changes how big that hole must be
Bay window cost $602 or $3,322 two figures five times apart because one prices the window and the other prices the structural work around it
Window screen replacement published average $317 the survey underneath it, where the most common single answer was $500, with more responses than any other price
Skylight installation about $1,500 to $1,900 a published low of $647 that buys a tube light rather than a skylight, and a high-end example that is dearer per unit, not cheaper

Where the numbers come from

Two publishers carry this section: This Old House, whose replacement figures come from its own 2026 survey of 1,000 window customers, and Fixr, which builds its ranges from pricing databases and contractors. Where a figure is surveyed we say so, and where a figure is unattributed we say that too, because on this subject the two behave differently even within the same publisher.

What connects this to the rest of the site

Windows are a heating and cooling decision as much as a building one. If you arrived here from our heating and cooling section, the glass package is the part of a window quote that touches your energy bill.
