The step up is smaller than it sounds
This Old House, from its homeowner survey:
| Glass package | Average per window |
|---|---|
| Double-pane | $529 |
| Triple-pane | $609 |
$80 a window, which is our subtraction. On a ten-window house that is $800 across a project that runs into five figures.
Our reading, marked as ours. Most people we would expect to read this page arrive assuming triple glazing is a large premium. On these figures it is not. That changes the question from "can I afford it" to "does it do anything for me here", which is the right question and the one the rest of this page is about.
Fixr prices the same two things, and disagrees about the step
Fixr publishes its own table of average cost per window installed:
| Type | Energy efficiency | Average cost per window, installed |
|---|---|---|
| Single-pane | low to medium | $239 to $435 |
| Double-pane | medium to high | $479 to $872 |
| Triple-pane | high | $654 to $1,190 |
Now set the two publishers side by side:
| This Old House, surveyed | Fixr, modelled | |
|---|---|---|
| Double-pane | $529 | $479 to $872 |
| Triple-pane | $609 | $654 to $1,190 |
Two things fall out of that, and both are our arithmetic.
First, the surveyed triple-pane average is below Fixr's cheapest modelled triple-pane window, by $45. What people reported paying for three panes is less than the floor of what the cost model says three panes should cost.
Second, the step from double to triple is not the same size in the two accounts. On the survey it is $80. On Fixr's table it is $175 at the bottom of each range and $318 at the top. The modelled step is two to four times the surveyed one.
Our reading, marked as ours. We do not think either source is wrong, and we would not average them. A survey captures what buyers ended up with, including the modest triple-pane units and the deals, while a model prices the specification properly built. What the comparison does tell you is that the premium you are quoted for the third pane can reasonably land anywhere between about $80 and about $300 a window, and that a quote at the top of that is not evidence of being overcharged, nor one at the bottom a sign of something cheap.
Fixr's double-pane headline is a project rather than a unit: $4,794 to $8,723 for a 10-window installation, national average $6,700, which is $670 a window by our division and sits inside its own per-window range.
What three in four people actually do
This Old House reports that of those who replaced windows for energy efficiency, nearly 76% chose double-pane, while 24% selected low-emissivity or low-E coatings.
Our reading, marked as ours. That is a strong revealed preference, and it is not a cost argument given the $80 gap. We read it as people buying the configuration that is stocked, quoted by default and available in the frame they want. Triple glazing is a specification you usually have to ask for.
The 24% figure is the more interesting one. A low-E coating is a different lever from a third pane, applied to the glass rather than added as another layer, and the two are not alternatives. If efficiency is the reason you are buying, both belong on the quote as separate line items so you can see what each costs.
One figure worth checking before you decide
Fixr notes a federal tax credit on energy-efficient windows: you can currently claim 30% of the cost of new windows, for a credit of up to $600.
Our note, marked as ours. We are reproducing the figure as Fixr states it and not as current tax advice, because credits of this kind change with legislation and our source is dated. Treat it as a reason to check the current rules before you buy rather than as a number to put in your budget. If it still applies when you buy, a $600 ceiling covers a meaningful share of the premium for triple glazing across a whole house.
When the third pane earns its place
Fixr describes the construction: triple-pane windows have three panes of glass and two insulating gaps, filled with air, argon or krypton. This Old House's framing is that added panes reduce heat transfer by adding insulating layers between the interior and exterior, and that triple-pane offers superior insulation and noise reduction while double-pane is the more affordable balance.
Our reading, marked as ours. Two gaps rather than one is the mechanism, and it is also the weight: triple units are heavier, which matters for large openings and for old sashes. On what the sources say, the case for triple glazing is strongest where the cold is sustained rather than occasional, or where noise is the actual complaint. Noise is the reason that gets least airtime and is often the one people are really buying for.
Where we would not pay the premium: a mild climate, a quiet street, or a window that is small to begin with, because the saving scales with the area of glass and a small window has little of it. One exception worth naming: a basement bedroom, where the window is usually below grade and the room is hard to heat, which our egress window page covers from the code side.
What to take from this
- $80 a window separates double from triple on surveyed prices. It is not the big decision people expect.
- Expect the quoted premium to vary widely. Published figures put the third pane anywhere between about $80 and about $300 a window.
- Triple glazing is usually a specification you must request. Three in four buyers end up with double.
- Low-E is a separate lever, not an alternative to a third pane. Ask for both as line items.
- Buy the third pane for sustained cold or for noise, not as a default upgrade on a small window in a mild climate.
- If the frames are sound and only the sealed unit has failed, our glass page covers that route instead.
