Gutters
Cleaning, guards, repair, replacement, sizes, styles, materials and brands, with the labor and material numbers behind each price.
Gutter work is small money compared with a roof, which is exactly why it is easy to overpay: few people get a second quote for a $200 job.
The jobs
| Page | The short answer | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning | $191 to $529 a visit | the per-foot rate triples from one storey to three, and that, not the average, sets your price |
| Repair | $195 to $625 | what each material costs to fix, and why seamless costs more than sectional |
| Installation | about $3,200 | two independent sources agree almost exactly, and a third now disagrees |
| Replacement | $1,700 to $4,699 | the removal line that reconciles two ranges which barely overlap |
| Downspouts | about $8 a foot | four published figures that look comparable and measure four different things |
| Cost per linear foot | $7 to $13 in aluminum | one publisher gives three different averages for the same 200 feet, lined up side by side |
| A 2,000 sq ft house | about $3,200 | the one house size every guide prices, with the whole published picture in one place |
| How often to clean | twice a year | what 1,000 homeowners actually do, which is not what the advice says |
| Doing it yourself | $400 to $1,200 saved | the sources disagree, and the disagreement tracks exactly what you are installing |
Sizes and styles
| Page | The short answer | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| What size do I need | 5 inches, 6 for big roofs | the downspout sizes that have to match, and why 5-inch is the cheapest size to own |
| Half-round or K-style | K-style, for most houses | K-style carries more than twice the water, and the price gap is thinner than everyone says |
The materials
| Page | The short answer | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum gutters | $7 to $13 a foot | two sources publish identical tables, so they are not two confirmations |
| Seamless gutters | about $1,984 for 200 feet | one publisher gives $1,984 and $3,200 for the same job four days apart, and we work out which applies |
| Zinc gutters | $16 to $29 a foot | two sources land $8 apart at the top and $1,192 apart at the bottom |
| Copper gutters | $20 to $40 a foot | six published figures lined up, the band they share, and whether 50 years pays for itself |
Gutter guards
| Page | The short answer | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Guards in general | $69 to $7,941 | why two credible sources differ by a factor of fifteen, and how to tell which one your quote is |
| LeafFilter | $8,344 for 200 feet | the 2026 figure sits entirely above the older published band, and we say what that probably means |
| Leafguard | $7,919 for 200 feet | three separate sources within half a percent, and the new gutters hidden inside the price |
The calculator
Gutter cost calculator builds a line-item range from your own footage, material, storeys, downspouts and guards, and shows the source on every line. No regional guesswork: we left that out because none of our sources publishes gutter labor by region.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure on these pages comes from Fixr, whose gutter guides were updated on 31 January 2025, This Old House, whose gutter guides were updated between April and October 2026, or Bob Vila, whose gutter guides date from June and November 2023. Each page names which, down to the specific guide.
Where sources disagree we say so rather than averaging them away. That happens most sharply on gutter guards, where one source is pricing the covers and the other is pricing a branded company fitting a whole house, and on seamless gutters, where one publisher contradicts itself within a week. This Old House publishes five different gutter cost tables across five of its own guides; our cost per linear foot page sets them out in one place.
Where a source takes a figure from a company that sells gutter work, we name that too. This Old House attributes its cleaning average to LeafFilter, carries an advertiser disclosure on its gutter guard pages, and sources several of its lifespan claims to gutter companies rather than to an independent body. Bob Vila's figures come from Angi and HomeAdvisor.
On review
Meriton Rexhepi is the designated reviewer for this section, as someone who cleans and repairs gutters as part of his exterior cleaning business.
He has not yet reviewed the pages above. They were published in October 2026 on the strength of their sources alone. When he has read a page, that page will carry his name as reviewer and we will say so here. Until then, treat these as carefully sourced rather than trade-checked. We would rather tell you that than put a practitioner's name on something he has not seen.

Questions answered
- How much do aluminum gutters cost?Updated 2026-10-29Aluminum gutters cost $7 to $13 per linear foot, which is $1,400 to $2,600 for the 200 feet a typical 2,000 square foot house needs. Fixr's gutter installation guide (January 31, 2025) publishes that band and puts whole-home installation at $1,467 to $2,668. This Old House's aluminum gutter guide (June 9, 2026) publishes the same $7 to $13 and the same $1,467 to $2,668, but calls the second figure labor rather than installation. This Old House's own installation guide (October 9, 2026) gives $1,535 for 200 feet of aluminum.
- How much do copper gutters cost?Updated 2026-10-29Copper gutters cost $20 to $40 per linear foot installed according to This Old House's copper gutters guide (May 22, 2026), which puts a standard installation at $4,000 to $8,000 and gives an average of $6,000. Fixr's gutter installation guide (January 31, 2025) is lower, at $18 to $32 per linear foot and $3,491 to $6,352 for a 200 foot home. Bob Vila's gutter installation guide (June 9, 2023) is higher, at $25 to $40 or more per linear foot. All three agree that copper lasts far longer than anything else, 50 years or more.
- Can you install gutters yourself?Updated 2026-10-29It depends on the material and the shape. This Old House's aluminum gutter guide (June 9, 2026) calls do-it-yourself aluminum installation manageable if you have some experience, and its guide to gutter types (April 22, 2026) says the same for small single-storey projects in vinyl or aluminum, while adding that seamless gutters must be fabricated on site by professionals. Fixr's gutter installation guide (January 31, 2025) does not recommend it at all and warns that doing it yourself can void the warranty. The labor you would save is $2 to $6 per linear foot for sectional gutters, according to Bob Vila's gutter installation guide (June 9, 2023).
- What does a downspout cost to replace?Updated 2026-10-29Replacing a downspout costs about $8 per linear foot according to This Old House's gutter repair guide (June 12, 2026), and installing one costs $7.43 to $13.51 per linear foot according to Fixr's gutter installation guide (January 31, 2025). Bob Vila's gutter installation guide (June 9, 2023) prices the material alone at $5 to $8 per foot in vinyl, $9 to $12 in aluminum and $17 or more in copper. This Old House's installation guide separately lists a downspout as a $4 to $21 retail part, which is a different measurement again.
- How much does gutter cleaning cost?Updated 2026-10-29Professional gutter cleaning costs $191 to $529 per appointment according to This Old House (June 17, 2026), and Fixr's gutter cleaning guide (January 31, 2025) puts the national average between $200 and $400, with most people paying around $300 for 150 linear feet on a two-storey house. The figure that decides your own price is not the average but the height: Fixr charges $0.70 to $1.50 per linear foot on a single storey, $1.50 to $2.50 on two and $2.50 to $3.20 on three.
- What do gutters cost per linear foot?Updated 2026-10-29Aluminum gutters, the usual choice, cost $7 to $13 per linear foot according to Fixr's gutter installation guide (January 31, 2025) and This Old House's aluminum gutter guide (June 9, 2026), which publish the identical band. Across all materials This Old House's installation guide (October 9, 2026) gives $3 to $29 per linear foot. The averages for a standard 200-foot system are where it gets difficult: This Old House publishes $1,984 on its seamless guide (October 13, 2026), $3,200 on its installation guide and $3,361 on its guide to gutter types (April 22, 2026).
- What do gutter guards really cost?Updated 2026-10-29Two credible sources give figures fifteen times apart. Fixr's gutter guard guide (January 31, 2025) says $69 to $600 with an average of $335, and states plainly that labor costs would be added on top. This Old House's 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners (October 6, 2026) reports $39.71 per linear foot, or $7,941 for a 200-foot system, with a median project of $5,000. Neither is wrong: one is the covers, the other is a branded company fitting a whole house.
- How much does gutter installation cost?Updated 2026-10-29Gutter installation costs about $3,200 for a typical home, and this is the rare figure where two independent sources land in the same place: This Old House (October 9, 2026) gives $600 to $5,800 for a 2,000 square foot home with an average of $3,200, and Fixr (January 31, 2025) gives $2,320 to $4,222 with a national average of $3,223. What moves your own number is the material, which This Old House prices from $3 to $29 per linear foot.
- How much does gutter repair cost?Updated 2026-10-29Gutter repair costs $195 to $625 with an average of $385 according to This Old House's repair guide (June 12, 2026), and Fixr's repair guide (January 31, 2025) gives a narrower $218 to $396 with an average of $307. The material decides where you land: This Old House prices an aluminum repair at $85 to $200 and a zinc one at $150 to $325. Both sources agree that a whole-system replacement is a different order of money, which is the comparison that matters once several runs are failing.
- What does it cost to replace gutters?Updated 2026-10-29This Old House's repair guide (June 12, 2026) puts a full gutter replacement at $1,700 to $3,100, while Fixr's repair guide (January 31, 2025) gives $2,582 to $4,699 for replacing an entire system. The gap is real and explainable: a replacement is a new installation plus the removal of the old gutters, which Fixr prices separately at $1.31 to $2.38 per linear foot, and the material you choose swings the rest by a factor of ten.
- What size gutters do I need?Updated 2026-10-29Gutters with 5-inch or 6-inch widths handle the rainfall on most houses in most parts of the United States, which This Old House's guide to gutter types (April 22, 2026) calls the optimal gutter size. Five inches suits most homes and six is recommended for larger roofs or regions with heavy precipitation, according to This Old House's half-round gutter guide (May 27, 2026). The downspout has to be sized to match: This Old House's K-style guide (June 1, 2026) gives 2 by 3 inches for 5-inch gutters and 3 by 4 inches for 6-inch gutters.
- What do gutters cost for a 2,000 sq ft house?Updated 2026-10-29A 2,000 square foot house needs about 200 linear feet of gutter, and This Old House's gutter installation guide (October 9, 2026) puts that at an average of $3,200 with a range of $600 to $5,800. Fixr's gutter installation guide (January 31, 2025) gives $2,320 to $4,222 with a national average of $3,223 for the same 200 feet. This Old House's seamless gutter guide (October 13, 2026) prices the same footage at $1,984, and Bob Vila's gutter installation guide (June 9, 2023) gives $1,000 to $3,000.
- Half-round or K-style gutters?Updated 2026-10-29K-style gutters handle more than twice the water volume of half-round gutters of the same width, according to This Old House Magazine as quoted on This Old House's K-style guide (June 1, 2026) and its guide to gutter types (April 22, 2026). Half-round is described as the more expensive style on both, because it needs professional installation and more brackets, but Bob Vila's gutter installation guide (June 9, 2023) prices K-style at $3 to $25 per linear foot and half-round at $4 to $25, which is a far smaller gap than the usual framing suggests.
- How often should gutters be cleaned?Updated 2026-10-29Gutters require cleaning at least twice per year on average, according to This Old House's gutter cleaning guide (June 17, 2026), and Fixr's gutter cleaning guide (January 31, 2025) names the two times as fall and spring. The same This Old House page reports from a Q4 2025 survey of 1,000 homeowners that only about 34 percent of people without gutter guards clean twice a year, while 41 percent clean annually. With guards fitted, 41 percent of respondents cleaned once a year and about 30 percent said they never needed to clean them again.
- How much does LeafFilter cost?Updated 2026-10-29LeafFilter costs $41.72 per linear foot, or about $8,344 for the 200 linear feet that covers a typical 2,000 square foot home, according to This Old House's LeafFilter cost guide (October 8, 2026), which draws on a 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners. Bob Vila's gutter guard guide (November 28, 2023) put LeafFilter at $15 to $39 per linear foot, using figures from Angi and HomeAdvisor. The newer average sits above the older band entirely, so the two do not overlap at all.
- How much does Leafguard cost?Updated 2026-10-29Leafguard costs $39.59 per linear foot, or about $7,919 for the 200 linear feet that covers a typical 2,000 square foot home, according to This Old House's Leafguard cost guide (October 12, 2026) and its 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners. The same page reports that Leafguard's own financing page assumes an installed job cost of $7,883, and that reviews on the Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot mention prices between $3,600 and $16,000. Unlike most guards, the price includes an entirely new gutter system rather than covers for the gutters you have.
- How much do seamless gutters cost?Updated 2026-10-29Seamless gutters cost about $1,984 for the 200 linear feet that covers a typical 2,000 square foot home, according to This Old House's seamless gutter cost guide (October 13, 2026), which prices aluminum at $7 per linear foot installed and vinyl at $4. Bob Vila's gutter guard guide (November 28, 2023) gives a seamless range of $652 to $1,720. The same This Old House that publishes $1,984 puts a 200-foot gutter installation at $3,200 on its general installation guide, updated four days earlier.
- How much do zinc gutters cost?Updated 2026-10-29Zinc gutters cost $16 to $29 per linear foot and $3,192 to $5,808 for the 200 feet a typical house needs, according to Fixr's gutter installation guide (January 31, 2025). This Old House's guide to gutter types (April 22, 2026) gives $2,000 to $5,800 for the same 200 feet, which tops out $8 below Fixr. Their seamless gutter guide (October 13, 2026) is the outlier at $40 per linear foot and $8,000. Zinc lasts about 50 years, says This Old House's half-round guide (May 27, 2026), and 50 to 100 according to Fixr.
