Gutter Cost Calculator

Enter your footage, material and storeys and see a line-item range with the source on every line. Enter a quote you already have and it tells you whether it sits inside the typical range.

Rule of thumb from both sources: about 10 feet per 100 square feet of house, so 200 feet on a 2,000 square foot home.

These two differ by more than a factor of ten. That is not an error, and the page below explains it.

US national figures

Ranges come from Fixr (January 2025), This Old House (October 2026) and Bob Vila (June 2023). The seamless premium and the downspout length are our own arithmetic. Not a quote. How this calculator works.

How this calculator works

Every line is a published figure multiplied by your footage. The tag on each row says where it came from: FX-I (Fixr, gutter installation, January 2025), FX-C (Fixr, gutter cleaning, January 2025), TOH-G (This Old House gutter guard survey, October 2026), BV (Bob Vila, June 2023), or HHC where the arithmetic is ours.

The gutters themselves. Fixr's per-foot bands by material: vinyl $5 to $10, aluminum $7 to $13, steel $7 to $12, zinc $16 to $29, copper $18 to $32, wood $17 to $31. Fixr pairs those with whole-home figures based on 200 linear feet, and multiplying the per-foot band by 200 lands within about five percent of them, which is the check that told us the two describe the same thing.

Seamless premium (our arithmetic). Bob Vila gives labor of $2 to $6 per foot for sectional gutters and $3 to $10 for seamless. We add the difference, $1 to $4 a foot, when you choose seamless. Neither source states the premium directly; the subtraction is ours.

Height. Bob Vila: add about $1 to $3 per linear foot for each storey above the first. That is the one height figure any of our sources publishes for installation, so it is the one we use.

Removal. Fixr prices taking the old gutters off at $1.31 to $2.38 per linear foot. This is the line that separates a replacement quote from an installation quote, and the one most often left out of a comparison.

Downspouts. Fixr puts them at $7.43 to $13.51 per linear foot installed. Our assumption: we estimate each downspout at roughly 10 feet of drop per storey. No source publishes a typical downspout length, so measure yours if the number matters to you.

Gutter guards, and why there are two options. Fixr's gutter cleaning guide prices guard installation at $2.60 to $18.50 per linear foot. This Old House's 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners puts branded installers at $39.59 per foot for the cheapest brand and $61.61 for the dearest. Those are more than a factor of ten apart and both are real. One is a local contractor fitting standard guards, the other is a company with a warranty, a sales process and an advertising budget. The gutter guard page works through the difference.

Heat tape. Fixr: around $5 per linear foot for the cord. Fitting is extra and we do not include it, because Fixr does not price it.

What this calculator deliberately does not do

No regional adjustment. Our water heater calculator applies a labor factor by region, marked as our own assumption. We have not done that here, because none of the gutter sources publishes labor rates by region and we would rather leave the gap visible than fill it with a number we made up. If you are in a high-cost metro, expect to sit above our range.

No single average. This Old House publishes three different averages for the same 200 linear feet, $1,984, $3,200 and $3,361, on three of its own pages. Our cost per linear foot page sets them out. Rather than pick one, this calculator builds the total from per-foot figures, which are the part the sources agree on.

The top of the range stacks every high end at once. Real jobs rarely do that. If your quote is near our low end with everything selected, that is not suspicious.

What the quote check means

  • More than 20% below the low end: possibly a good local price, often a quote missing the removal line, the downspouts or the guards. Ask for it itemized.
  • Inside the range: typical for what you selected.
  • Up to 25% above the high end: a difficult roofline, a high-cost area or a heavier gauge. Ask what is driving it.
  • More than 25% above: get a second quote, and check whether it is quoting a whole new system rather than the job you asked about.

The check is only as fair as the boxes you ticked. If the quote includes guards and you left guards off, the comparison is unfair to the contractor.
