What do gutters cost per linear foot?

Short answer

Aluminum gutters, the usual choice, cost $7 to $13 per linear foot according to Fixr's gutter installation guide (January 31, 2025) and This Old House's aluminum gutter guide (June 9, 2026), which publish the identical band. Across all materials This Old House's installation guide (October 9, 2026) gives $3 to $29 per linear foot. The averages for a standard 200-foot system are where it gets difficult: This Old House publishes $1,984 on its seamless guide (October 13, 2026), $3,200 on its installation guide and $3,361 on its guide to gutter types (April 22, 2026).

The number you probably want

$7 to $13 per linear foot for aluminum, which is what most houses get. Fixr publishes that band and This Old House's aluminum guide publishes the same one. On 200 feet that is $1,400 to $2,600.

Everything below is why it is worth knowing how shaky the ground under a per-foot figure is.

Three averages, one publisher, one measurement

This Old House publishes an average cost for a standard 200-linear-foot system on three separate gutter pages:

This Old House page Updated 200 feet Per foot, our division
Seamless gutter cost 13 October 2026 $1,984 $9.92
Gutter installation cost 9 October 2026 $3,200 $16.00
Types of gutters 22 April 2026 $3,361 $16.81

$1,377 between the lowest and the highest, by our subtraction, for the same length of gutter from the same publisher. Our seamless page works through the first two in detail, including why the lower one is probably the better guide for an ordinary aluminum job.

None of the three pages mentions the others.

Five material tables that do not agree either

The same publisher also prices materials on four pages, and Fixr and Bob Vila on one each. Converted to a common basis of 200 linear feet, with our division to a per-foot figure where the source gives only a total:

Source Vinyl Aluminum Galvanized steel Zinc Copper
This Old House, installation $571 $1,535 $1,604 not listed $5,749
This Old House, types $600 to $1,200 $1,000 to $2,800 $1,200 to $2,800 $2,000 to $5,800 $5,000 to $8,000
This Old House, seamless $800 $1,400 $1,800 $8,000 $4,000
This Old House, copper guide $1,725 to $1,850 $2,000 to $2,430 $2,800 to $3,200 not listed $6,250 to $9,500
Fixr $1,044 to $1,900 $1,467 to $2,668 $1,344 to $2,445 $3,192 to $5,808 $3,491 to $6,352

Aluminum, the common case, is given as $1,400, $1,535, $1,000 to $2,800, $1,467 to $2,668 and $2,000 to $2,430. Bob Vila adds $4 to $14 per foot, which is $800 to $2,800.

Our arithmetic, marked as ours, and it does not resolve neatly. The four sources that give a range overlap only at $2,000 to $2,430, which is $10 to $12.15 a foot. The two sources that give a single figure, $1,400 and $1,535, both fall below that. So there is no band that contains all six.

What does contain all six is the per-foot band the two sources state outright: $7 to $13, or $1,400 to $2,600 on 200 feet. Every published figure above either sits inside it or overlaps it.

That is why we lead with the per-foot number rather than an average, which is the opposite of how most cost guides present it.

Why the averages scatter and the per-foot figures do not

A per-foot price describes a product. An average describes a market, and a market contains copper mansions and vinyl bungalows in proportions nobody publishes.

Divide This Old House's $3,200 installation average by 200 feet and you get $16 a foot. On their own material tables, $16 a foot is not aluminum, it is somewhere between galvanized steel and copper. The average is not describing the house most people live in.

So use per-foot figures to check a quote, and treat any average as background. That is our conclusion, not either source's.

What else is priced by the foot

These come off the same quote and are easy to confuse with the gutter rate:

Item Per linear foot Source
Gutters, aluminum $7 to $13 Fixr and This Old House
Gutters, all materials $3 to $29 This Old House installation guide
Removing the old gutters $1.31 to $2.38 Fixr
Downspouts, installed $7.43 to $13.51 Fixr
Seamless labor alone about $5 This Old House seamless guide

Our replacement page shows what happens when the removal line is left out of a comparison, and our downspout page sorts out four downspout figures that measure four different things.

Gutter guards per foot, where the spread is worst

If you are comparing per-foot quotes you will meet guard pricing, and it does not behave like gutter pricing.

On This Old House's aluminum guide, Tom Silva says on Ask This Old House that professional-only, dealer-installed gutter protection systems "are installed at around $10 to 15 a foot," which "could mean your house would probably be $2,500," while do-it-yourself options are available "around a dollar a foot."

On This Old House's own 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners, the branded installers come out at $39.59 to $61.61 per linear foot, as our gutter guard page sets out.

That is the same publisher, carrying a named expert whose figure is a third of what its own survey reports. Neither page mentions the other. We are not going to tell you which is right, because they may both be describing real quotes from different ends of the same trade. We would say that if you are quoted $40 a foot for guards, This Old House's own master carpenter thinks $10 to $15 buys a dealer-installed system.

Working out your own footage

About 10 linear feet of gutter for every 100 square feet of house, so roughly 200 feet on a 2,000 square foot home. Every published figure for that exact house is collected on our 2,000 square foot house page, and our calculator multiplies the per-foot bands by your own footage. Fixr gives that rule and This Old House arrives at the same place from the other direction. Our sizing page covers what width that 200 feet should be.
