What do gutter guards really cost?

Short answer

Two credible sources give figures fifteen times apart. Fixr's gutter guard guide (January 31, 2025) says $69 to $600 with an average of $335, and states plainly that labor costs would be added on top. This Old House's 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners (October 6, 2026) reports $39.71 per linear foot, or $7,941 for a 200-foot system, with a median project of $5,000. Neither is wrong: one is the covers, the other is a branded company fitting a whole house.

The contradiction, stated first

Source Figure What it covers
Fixr $69 to $600, average $335 the covers themselves, 150 linear feet of metal mesh
Fixr, elsewhere $1,885 to $3,430 a whole gutter system fitted with guards
This Old House $7,941 for 200 linear feet a branded company installing on a whole house

Fifteen times between the first and the last. If you have read one of these numbers and then received a quote based on another, this page is the explanation.

Why both are right

Fixr is pricing the product. Their guide puts the national average at $69 to $600 for 150 linear feet of metal mesh covers, with 100 linear feet of PVC covers at $51 to $86 and 200 linear feet of surface tension guards at $700 to $1,300. Then comes the sentence that reconciles everything: "Labor costs would be added, depending on how many hours it takes to perform the work."

So the Fixr headline is a materials number. It was never meant to be your invoice.

This Old House is pricing the transaction. Their figure comes from a 2026 survey of 1,000 homeowners nationwide, reporting what people actually paid branded installers. Median total project $5,000, with the middle half between $4,138 and $6,000, and a full range of $4,000 to $30,000.

Fixr's own middle figure confirms the bridge. On their repair guide, Fixr says installing guards runs $9 to $17 per square foot, so outfitting an entire system costs $1,885 to $3,430, and adds that shopping around or covering only the gutters under trees could bring it under $1,000.

What the branded installers charge

From the This Old House survey, per linear foot and for a 200-foot house:

Brand Per linear foot 200 linear feet
Leafguard $39.59 $7,919
LeafFilter $41.72 $8,344
Gutter Guards America $46.77 $9,353
All American Gutter Protection $47.02 $9,403
HomeCraft $61.61 $12,322

The spread between the cheapest and dearest brand is about 56 percent for what is, in material terms, a similar product.

The two cheapest have their own pages, because they are the two most searched and because they are not selling the same thing: LeafFilter fits guards to the gutters you have, while Leafguard replaces the gutters as well.

What the material alone costs

Also from This Old House, their do-it-yourself table, and from Fixr:

Guard type Per linear foot (This Old House) 200 linear feet
Brush-style $18.94 $3,787
Foam inserts $21.58 $4,316
Screen $38.12 $7,624
Micro-mesh $40.50 $8,101
Surface tension $41.22 $8,244

Fixr's equivalent is $2.60 to $18.50 per linear foot, which appears on their gutter cleaning guide rather than their guard guide. Corrected 15 October 2026: this page previously attributed that band to Fixr's installation guide. The figure is unchanged; the guide it comes from was named wrongly.

An honest note on that table. This Old House labels it as do-it-yourself costs but adds that the figures include labor costs, which does not sit easily with the heading. We are reproducing it as published rather than quietly correcting it, and we would treat the brush and foam rows as the dependable part, since those are the products you can genuinely buy and fit yourself.

The savings This Old House calculates against professional installation run from $1,224 for surface tension guards to $5,681 for brush-style.

A fourth figure, from the same publisher. On This Old House's aluminum gutter guide, Tom Silva says professional-only, dealer-installed gutter protection systems "are installed at around $10 to 15 a foot," and that do-it-yourself options are available "around a dollar a foot." That is a third of what the survey above reports. Our cost per linear foot page sets the two against each other.

How to tell which number your quote is

  1. Under $600 total. You are being quoted covers, probably with your own labor or a short visit. Ask explicitly whether labor is included.
  2. $1,000 to $3,500. This is Fixr's whole-system band, typical of a local contractor fitting standard guards.
  3. $4,000 and up. This is the branded-installer band from the survey. You are buying a product with a long warranty and a sales process attached.

Our conclusion, marked as ours: none of these is a rip-off on its own terms, but comparing a brand quote against a materials figure you read online will make a fair price look outrageous and a bad price look normal. Insist that every quote names the linear footage and whether labor is in it. Neither source frames the three bands this way; the grouping is ours.

Does it pay back

Our cleaning page puts a typical clean at around $300 and This Old House says gutters need cleaning at least twice a year, dropping to about once a year with guards.

Update, 16 October 2026. That drop is no longer only an estimate. This Old House's Q4 2025 survey of 1,000 homeowners found that 30 percent of people with guards never cleaned their gutters again, against 9 percent without, while 41 percent cleaned once a year either way. Our cleaning frequency page sets the before and after side by side.

Our arithmetic, marked as ours. That saves roughly one clean a year, about $300. Against Fixr's whole-system band of $1,885 to $3,430 that is six to eleven years. Against the survey's $7,941 it is twenty-six years, which is longer than most of the gutters underneath will last. The case for guards at the top of the market is not the cleaning bill; it has to be the warranty, the avoided ladder work, or water damage you would otherwise risk. Neither source does this calculation.

Before fitting guards to old gutters, note what This Old House observes: if your current gutters are in bad shape, installers typically recommend installing new ones first. That turns a guard job into a replacement.
