How much does gutter repair cost?

Short answer

Gutter repair costs $195 to $625 with an average of $385 according to This Old House's repair guide (June 12, 2026), and Fixr's repair guide (January 31, 2025) gives a narrower $218 to $396 with an average of $307. The material decides where you land: This Old House prices an aluminum repair at $85 to $200 and a zinc one at $150 to $325. Both sources agree that a whole-system replacement is a different order of money, which is the comparison that matters once several runs are failing.

What it costs

Source Range Average
This Old House, June 2026 $195 to $625 $385
Fixr, January 2025 $218 to $396 $307

This Old House's range is wider at both ends and their average is $78 higher. Our reading, marked as ours: the wider range is the more useful one to budget against, because the narrow Fixr band describes the middle of the market rather than its edges. Neither source comments on the other.

By the foot, This Old House prices traditional K-style gutters at $8 to $15 per linear foot of material to repair.

What the material does to the price

This Old House's per-material table, with their stated average:

Material Repair range Average
Aluminum $85 to $200 $143
Steel $100 to $225 $163
Copper $125 to $250 $188
Zinc $150 to $325 $238

Zinc costs about 66 percent more to repair than aluminum on the averages. That is worth knowing before you choose a premium material for a new system: the higher price follows you through the system's whole life, not just the purchase.

The gutter's shape matters here too: box and fascia gutters need construction to reach, which This Old House says can double the cost. Our half-round and K-style page covers what each style is like to live with.

The seam question

This Old House names two design factors that most price guides skip.

Seamless costs more to repair than sectional. Their figures: seamless repairs run $125 to $250 against $100 to $225 for sectional. The reason is structural, in their words: because seamless gutters are custom-made from a single piece, damaged sections often require partial replacement rather than smaller spot repairs.

Fascia and box gutters can double it. This Old House: some gutter styles require construction to access and repair, which can double the cost compared with other types.

What a seamless system costs to fit in the first place is its own question, and one where This Old House contradicts itself: see seamless gutter cost.

Our note, marked as ours: seamless is usually sold on having fewer leak points, which is a real advantage. The trade is that when it does fail, you replace a length rather than patch a joint. Neither source frames it as a trade-off; both halves are theirs.

When repairing stops making sense

Put the repair against the replacement. Both sources publish the comparison, and they disagree substantially:

What Figure Source
Repair, average $307 to $385 both
Full replacement $1,700 to $3,100 This Old House
Full replacement $2,582 to $4,699 Fixr

Our conclusion, marked as ours. On the lower replacement figure of $1,700, between four and six average repairs equal a new system. On Fixr's $2,582 it is seven to eight. Since a repair buys you a patch on gutters that are the same age everywhere, a house needing its third separate repair in a season is usually paying instalments on a replacement it will buy anyway. The replacement page works through why the two sources differ by so much.

Why it is not optional

This Old House on the stakes: ignoring damaged gutters can lead to more serious problems over time, including foundation damage, roof leaks, siding stains, and soil erosion around the foundation.

That is the honest argument for spending $385 on a job that feels postponable. The failure modes it prevents are all more expensive than the gutter.

Downspouts are priced separately

This Old House puts downspout replacement at about $8 per linear foot and notes that each downspout needing work adds to the bill. Because four different publishers measure downspouts four different ways, we gave them their own page: what a downspout costs.

Catching it early

Most repairs start as something noticed during a clean, which is an argument for keeping to a schedule: see how often gutters should be cleaned. Our cleaning page covers what a visit should include, and Fixr lists repairing fasteners and seals as part of a standard clean, which means small fixes are often already in the price you are paying twice a year.
