Why this house size and not another
Every cost guide we use builds its figures on the same benchmark: a 2,000 square foot home with 200 linear feet of gutter. The rule behind it is about 10 feet of gutter per 100 square feet of house, and both Fixr and This Old House arrive at it.
That makes this page unusual. Most of our gutter pages explain why published figures do not line up. Here they are at least all describing the same house, so you can read them side by side without converting anything.
Fitting the gutters
| Source | For 200 linear feet |
|---|---|
| This Old House, installation guide, October 2026 | $600 to $5,800, average $3,200 |
| Fixr, January 2025 | $2,320 to $4,222, average $3,223 |
| This Old House, types of gutters, April 2026 | average $3,361 |
| This Old House, seamless guide, October 2026 | $1,984 |
| Bob Vila, June 2023 | $1,000 to $3,000 |
The two averages at the top are $23 apart, our subtraction, from two publishers using different methods twenty months apart. That is the closest agreement anywhere in this cluster.
The other three are further off, and our cost per linear foot page works through why: the seamless figure describes an aluminum job, the $3,361 is an average over a different material mix, and Bob Vila's is three years older and drawn from HomeAdvisor.
Our reading, marked as ours: take roughly $3,200 as the number to argue from, and expect to land below it if you are buying aluminum and above it if you are not.
What the material does to that house
Every published figure we have for this exact footage, by material:
| Material | Fixr | This Old House, types | This Old House, installation | This Old House, seamless |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | $1,044 to $1,900 | $600 to $1,200 | $571 | $800 |
| Aluminum | $1,467 to $2,668 | $1,000 to $2,800 | $1,535 | $1,400 |
| Steel | $1,344 to $2,445 | $1,200 to $2,800 | $1,604 | $1,800 |
| Zinc | $3,192 to $5,808 | $2,000 to $5,800 | not listed | $8,000 |
| Copper | $3,491 to $6,352 | $5,000 to $8,000 | $5,749 | $4,000 |
| Wood | $3,384 to $6,157 | not listed | $5,512 | not listed |
Aluminum, which every source calls the usual choice, is the row where they come closest together. Our aluminum page explains why two of those figures are not as independent as they look.
What is not in the headline figure
These are separate lines on a real quote for this house, and each one is priced per foot:
| Line | Rate | On 200 feet | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Removing the old gutters | $1.31 to $2.38 per foot | $262 to $476 | Fixr |
| Downspouts, installed | $7.43 to $13.51 per foot | depends on count and height | Fixr |
| Heat tape, material | about $5 per foot | about $1,000 | Fixr |
Our arithmetic, marked as ours. The removal line turns a $2,320 to $4,222 installation into a $2,582 to $4,698 replacement, which is within a dollar of Fixr's own separately published replacement figure of $2,582 to $4,699. Our replacement page sets that out in full.
The two numbers that dwarf the gutters
For the same 2,000 square foot house and the same 200 linear feet:
| What | For this house | Source |
|---|---|---|
| New gutters, average | $3,200 | This Old House, installation |
| Gutter guards, branded installer | $8,344 | This Old House, LeafFilter guide |
Guards can cost more than twice the gutters they sit on. That is not an error in either figure. Our gutter guard page explains the gap between a branded installer and a local contractor, and our LeafFilter and Leafguard pages price the two largest brands for exactly this house.
Checking a quote for this house
- Divide by your footage. If you have 200 feet, divide the quote by 200. Aluminum should come out near $7 to $13 a foot.
- Find the removal line. A replacement quote without one is an installation quote with the old gutters quietly priced in, or quietly forgotten.
- Count the downspouts. They are priced separately and by the foot, so a two-storey house pays twice over, which our downspout page works through.
- Measure, do not assume. The 200 feet is a rule of thumb from a square footage figure. An L-shaped or complex roofline can need considerably more.
Our gutter cost calculator does all four from your own numbers and shows the source on every line.
