The two published ranges
| Source | Compressor replacement |
|---|---|
| Bob Vila, August 2023 | $800 to $2,800, average $1,200 |
| Fixr, January 2026 | $600 to $3,000, no average given |
The ranges overlap across most of their length. Fixr reaches $200 lower at the bottom and $200 higher at the top, two and a half years later. Our reading, marked as ours: for a part this variable, that is as close to agreement as this topic gets, and the single average of $1,200 is the more useful planning figure of the two.
Where the compressor sits among the other parts
This is Fixr's replacement-parts table in full, because the compressor only means something next to the rest of it:
| Replacement part | Cost range |
|---|---|
| Fuse | $75 to $300 |
| Relay switch | $75 to $300 |
| Capacitor | $100 to $400 |
| Condensate pump | $100 to $500 |
| Circuit board | $100 to $700 |
| Thermostat | $150 to $500 |
| Drain pan | $200 to $600 |
| Expansion valve | $300 to $500 |
| Blower motor | $300 to $2,000 |
| Evaporator coil | $400 to $2,700 |
| Condenser coil | $600 to $2,400 |
| Compressor | $600 to $3,000 |
The compressor is the top line. Fixr explains why the expensive parts have such wide bands: compressors, evaporator coils and blower motors vary with the tonnage of the system, so a 5-ton house and a 2-ton house are not quoting the same part.
Bob Vila gives that tonnage effect directly: a 1.5-ton compressor may cost $700 to $1,300 to replace, a 5-ton compressor $1,800 to $2,600.
The rule that decides it, worked through
Fixr publishes the test most contractors use:
The $5,000 rule for HVAC provides an easy way to estimate if you should repair or replace your AC system. Start by getting an estimate for the repair, and then multiply the cost by the age of your system in years. If that number is higher than $5,000, then replacing your AC probably makes more financial sense.
Our arithmetic, marked as ours. Run the compressor prices through it:
| Compressor price | Fails the rule above this system age |
|---|---|
| $600, Fixr's low end | 8.3 years |
| $1,200, Bob Vila's average | 4.2 years |
| $3,000, Fixr's high end | 1.7 years |
At the average price of $1,200, the rule says replace the system on anything older than about four years. That is a startling result, and we do not think you should act on it blindly. Fixr itself calls it "just a rule of thumb". But it tells you something real: a compressor is not a repair that a rule of thumb will ever approve. On this one part, you have to do the comparison properly.
So do the comparison properly
Bob Vila prices the alternatives on the same guide:
| What you could buy instead | Cost |
|---|---|
| Blower | $200 to $500 |
| Thermostat | $100 to $250 |
| Evaporator or condenser coils | $400 to $1,500 |
| Ductwork | $15 per linear foot |
| Central AC unit | $3,882 to $7,907 |
Our arithmetic. A $1,200 compressor is between about a seventh and a third of a new central AC unit at $3,882 to $7,907. Bob Vila also puts the useful life of an AC unit at 15 to 20 years, and Fixr puts compressor life at 10 to 15 years with blower motors at about 20.
So the question is not "is $1,200 a lot for a compressor". It is: how many years of the unit's 15 to 20 are left, and what else is the same age. Our central air page has what a replacement costs from two other publishers, and our AC repair page covers the smaller faults that are usually worth fixing.
A quote we are flagging rather than using
Bob Vila's guide quotes Lane Dixon, vice president of operations at Aire Serv, saying that an out-of-warranty system needing expensive repairs may be time to consider a replacement.
We are naming the source rather than leaning on it. Aire Serv sells HVAC replacement. The advice may well be right, and the arithmetic above points the same way, but a replacement recommendation sourced to a replacement company is not independent evidence, and the guide does not say so. This is the same thing we flagged on our duct cleaning page, where the highest published figure came from the trade association of the firms selling the work.
One figure on that page we would not repeat
The same guide says that while replacing a compressor runs $1,200 nationally, "repairing the compressor could run between $75 and $150."
Our note, marked as ours. We think that is a diagnostic or service-call figure that has ended up under a repair heading. Fixr's minimum service fee is $75 for the same market. A sealed refrigerant component that costs $600 to $3,000 to swap does not have a $75 repair path, and we would treat any quote framed that way as a call-out fee with the real work still to be priced.
What the compressor costs by unit type
Bob Vila breaks it down by what you own:
| Unit type | Average compressor cost |
|---|---|
| Window unit | $200 to $500 |
| Mini-split | $500 to $600 |
| Heat pump | $800 to $3,000 |
| Central AC | $800 to $2,800 |
On a window unit at $200 to $500, the compressor is most of the price of a new machine. Our reading: nobody replaces a window unit compressor, and the row exists for completeness rather than as advice. The mini-split row at $500 to $600 is the narrowest band on the page, which our mini split page puts in context. Before any of this, check the cheap part: our AC capacitor page covers the component that imitates a compressor fault for a fraction of the price.
Before you authorise the work
- Ask for the tonnage. It moves the price from $700 to $2,600 on Bob Vila's own figures, and it is on the data plate.
- Ask whether the part is under warranty. Bob Vila says a warranted compressor typically leaves you paying about $600 to $1,200 for the labor and refrigerant.
- Ask whether a generic compressor is acceptable. Bob Vila puts the saving at up to $200, and says many brands accept them.
- Ask what the refrigerant costs. If the system has to be charged from empty, Bob Vila adds $100 to $350.
- Price a full replacement at the same time. On the $5,000 rule the compressor rarely wins, and you want both numbers in front of you before you decide.
- If you can wait, wait. Bob Vila's guide notes that most AC failures happen in summer when technicians are busiest, and that waiting for autumn may lower the price.
Whether this repair is worth making comes down to how much life the rest of the system has, and our lifespan page collects what both publishers say about that, including the awkward fact that a compressor is expected to fail before the machine around it does.
