How much does boiler repair cost?

Short answer

Boiler repair costs $150 to $750 with a national average of $450, according to Fixr's boiler service and repair guide (updated January 26, 2026). Bob Vila's boiler service guide (updated November 28, 2023) gives a typical range of $189 to $640 with an average of $413, but that figure blends repairs with inspections, cleaning and routine maintenance. Bob Vila's own repair row is $150 to $750, identical to Fixr's range for the same job.

$450
National average for a repair (Fixr)
$150 to $750
Repair range, identical on both guides
$413
Average for service, which is a different job (Bob Vila)
$75 to $250
A service call on its own (Bob Vila)

Two words that are not the same job

Search for what a boiler costs to fix and you will be shown an average of $413. That figure is for boiler service, and Bob Vila's own table shows that service is five different things:

What you are buying Cost
Boiler service call $75 to $250
Boiler cleaning or descaling $150 to $350
Routine maintenance $150 to $400
Annual inspection $200 to $400
Boiler repair $150 to $750

Four of those five are planned work on a boiler that is working. Only the last one is what people mean when something has gone wrong.

Our reading, marked as ours: the $413 average is a blend across that whole column, which is why it sits below the repair row's midpoint. If your boiler has stopped, the number you want is the bottom row.

And on that row, the two publishers agree exactly

Source Repair range Average
Fixr, January 2026 $150 to $750 $450
Bob Vila, November 2023 $150 to $750 not stated for repair alone

Identical, to the dollar, two years apart, our comparison.

We check that kind of agreement now rather than celebrating it, because on our evaporator coil page an identical pair of figures turned out to come from one upstream dataset. Here the disclosures are mixed: Bob Vila writes that "according to Angi and HomeAdvisor, boiler service typically costs" its stated range, while Fixr says it builds figures from its own pricing databases and contractors.

Our honest reading: we cannot tell whether this is independent convergence or two routes back to the same market data, and $150 and $750 are round enough that either is plausible. We would treat the range as well supported and the precision as illusory.

What it costs by fuel

Boiler type Fixr, 2026 Bob Vila, 2023
Gas $100 to $400 not priced separately
Propane $100 to $400 not priced separately
Electric $200 to $500 $200 to $450
Oil $200 to $550 not priced separately
Wood not priced $240 to $500

Fixr's point is that oil is the dearest to fix, because oil boilers carry components the others do not. Its gas and propane rows are identical, which it explains: propane boilers are fundamentally very similar to natural gas boilers.

Our note: every one of these fuel rows tops out below the $750 headline. The headline range is reached by component, not by fuel.

The parts, from both guides

Component Fixr, 2026 Bob Vila, 2023
Ignitor or ignition switch $100 to $400 not listed
Thermocouple $100 to $400 not listed
Transformer $150 to $500 not listed
Radiator valve not listed $180 to $330
Zone valve $175 to $500 not listed
Fan $200 to $500 $200 to $500
Expansion tank $200 to $800 $200 to $550
Flue not listed $300 to $700
Gas valve $200 to $1,100 $300 to $1,100
Circulator pump $300 to $1,100 $300 to $1,000
Coil or heat exchanger $500 to $1,000 $500 to $1,000

Two rows match exactly, the fan and the coil. Three more share one endpoint. Fixr sums it up as components costing between $100 and $1,100 to fix.

Our reading, marked as ours. The cheap end of this table is electrical: ignitors, thermocouples, transformers. The expensive end is anything that moves water or gas. That ordering is the useful part, because it tells you which diagnoses mean a few hundred dollars and which mean most of a thousand, before anyone quotes you.

Bob Vila prices one symptom rather than one part: water pressure problems cost about $200 to $1,000 to fix, because the cause could be a leak, a valve or a pump.

Labor

Bob Vila: a flat fee of about $150 to $300, or hourly at $75 to $130 per hour. After hours, weekends and holidays cost more.

Our arithmetic, marked as ours. A flat $150 to $300 against a repair averaging $450 means labor is roughly a third to two thirds of a typical bill. On the cheap electrical parts it is most of the bill. That is the same pattern we found on our AC capacitor page, where the part costs under fifty dollars and the visit costs the rest.

One recommendation we are flagging

Bob Vila quotes John Gabrielli, described as an HVAC expert and owner of Air Temp Solutions.

We are naming the affiliation rather than hiding it. Air Temp Solutions sells boiler work. The advice may be sound, but a service recommendation sourced to a service company is not independent evidence. We flag these wherever we meet them, as we did with the trade association behind the highest duct-cleaning figure on our duct cleaning page.

When repair stops being the answer

Our boiler replacement page has the replacement figure: an average of $6,100 on the same Fixr data.

Our arithmetic. At a $450 average repair, that is about one fourteenth of a replacement, so a single repair is almost always worth doing. The arithmetic changes at the top of the table: a $1,100 gas valve or circulator pump on an old boiler is about one sixth of a new one, and at that point the age of the unit decides. Fixr puts annual service at $200 to $500, which over a decade is a comparable sum to one major repair, and our maintenance page covers whether those contracts pay.

Before you authorise the work

  1. Ask whether you are being quoted a repair or a service. The published averages mix them, and so do some invoices.
  2. Ask which component failed before you accept a price. The table above turns a diagnosis into a range.
  3. Ask whether the call-out fee comes off the repair. At $75 to $250 it is a meaningful share of a small job.
  4. Ask for the flat fee if you are offered an hourly rate, or the reverse. Bob Vila gives both, and they are not equivalent on a short job.
  5. If the quote is near $1,100, price a replacement too, and read our boiler replacement page first.
