The arithmetic that does not work, and why that matters

Multiply the rates by the hours and you get numbers that do not match the quoted labor ranges. At $40 an hour for 1 hour, labor is $40; both sources quote a floor of $140 or $300. At $200 an hour for 4 hours, labor is $800; Fixr quotes a ceiling of $1,500.

Our reading, stated as such. Neither source explains the gap, so this is our inference rather than published fact. Three things are likely happening. A plumber charges a minimum call-out, so a 90-minute job is not billed at 90 minutes. The quoted hours cover the swap itself, not the trip, the supply run, the permit paperwork or the haul-away. And the top of the labor range is not a long job at a normal rate, it is a difficult job: a tight closet, an attic, a vent that has to be rebuilt.

What to do with that. Do not price a quote by multiplying an hourly rate by an estimate of the hours. Compare the labor line against the ranges in the table above, and ask what is inside it.

Whether removal and disposal are inside it.
